So, how many people think the world will end tomorrow on May 21st? If humanity can learn from history, then the history of the church tells us it’s not likely. Jesus himself explicitly said that we would not know the day of his return to Earth (Matthew 24:36), and that it would come “at an hour you do not expect” (Matthew 24:44 ). So, if everyone expects him to return on May 21, that’s when he is least likely to show.
Still, Christians have not been able to resist predicting the end of the world. Jesus really should have repeated himself more. In this country, two whole denominations can trace themselves back to charismatic preachers with apocalyptic visions. The Seventh Day Adventist Denomination actually began after two failed attempts at predicting the end of the world. You can read more about that here. Charles Taze Russell, the man behind the origins of the Jehovah’s Witness movement also predicted Christ would return in 1914. We are still here and interestingly enough, so are these denominations. You can read more about the Jehova’s Witnesses here. Given the history of groups like this, It’s not unlikely that the May 21 crowd will stick around, or even become its own church.
Okay, so we’ll likely all be fine tomorrow, but let’s not give these folks a too hard time. After all, our country is in debt to China, we are still in a recession, we are still involved in wars overseas, and terrorists still want to kill us. We’ve had several horrific natural disasters in recent history; Katrina, Haiti, the Tsunami, etc. These kind of events can inspire the imagination of the eccentric and religious. Really, if we don’t get some better solutions to our country’s problems soon-and fast, this country is not headed good places.
Hard times may inspire religious paranoia, but they should also call us to action. What should we do on a more serious political level? I have no idea; so I blog about this weird kind of stuff. In case the government falls and currency becomes meaningless, I have made some preparations. I’m learning how to hunt, grow my own food, spear fish, use a sling shot, fight with a quarterstaff, kick box, and pick stuff up with my feet. I shall make no wild religious predictions here though, or helpful political suggestions. Please read a better blog for that. If anyone knows how to forge a knife from the bones of a slaughtered boar, possibly mutated by radiation, do post them here if you have the time.

Hello World!
Welcome, to my new religion blog. I have always been fascinated by religion, philosophy, and mythology for as long as I can remember. I completed a double major in Communication and Religion from Florida State in 2007, and have since wandered the earth blogging and searching for meaningful employment. If you like random discussions about religion, culture, Christianity, God, etc. check back often.
